Creating Search Filters

This feature is supported in DotNet Help, WebHelp, WebHelp Plus, and WebHelp AIR output.

After you add a new search filter set and insert concepts into topics, you can create search filters, which let users narrow their search based on concepts that you have inserted into topics. For an example with complete steps see Search Filter Set Example.

example

Let's say you have a group of topics that have one thing in common—they all discuss the subject of hot dogs. So you create and insert a concept called "HotDogs" into each of those topics. If you then create a search filter based on this "HotDogs" concept, users will be able to perform a search in your Help system that looks only at those specific topics that discuss hot dogs.

How to create a search filter

  1. Make sure the Project Organizer is open. By default, the Project Organizer is located on the left side of the interface in an accordion structure with the Content Explorer, unless you have previously moved it and saved the new layout. You may have to click the Project Organizer bar to bring it into view.

  2. Double-click the Advanced folder.

Any search filter sets that you have added are listed.

  3. Double-click the search filter set in which you want to create a search filter.

The Search Filter Set Editor opens to the right. By default, Flare provides you with an initial search filter called "subset," which you can rename and use.

  4. To create a new search filter, click in the local toolbar.

A new search filter row is added, with a temporary name for the search filter.

  5. To enter a new name or comment for a search filter, do one of the following.
  6. To associate a concept with the search filter, click the Concepts cell.

The Select Concepts for Search Filter dialog opens. The concepts that you have inserted into topics are listed on the right side of the dialog.

  7. In the All Concepts section, click on a concept that you want to add to the search filter. Then click .

The concept is added to the "All Concepts" section on the left side of the dialog. Do this for each concept that you want to add to the search filter.

  8. Click OK.
  9. Press CTRL+S or click to save your work.

WHAT'S NEXT?

After you create search filters, you need to associate the search filter set with the target that you want to build.
