Registering MIME Types and File Extensions for XPS Output

If you want users to download an XPS document from a server (e.g., from a website), you need to enable the server to do this by registering the MIME types and file extensions.

The following steps pertain to a server running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). You should provide this information to the individual(s) responsible for software on your company's server. Exact steps may vary depending on the operating system.

How to register a MIME type and file extensions for XPS output

  1. Open the Control Panel. On many computers, you can do this by clicking Start>Control Panel.
  2. Make sure that Microsoft IIS is installed on the server. If it is not, use the following steps:
    1. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

The Add or Remove Programs window opens.

    2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

      The Windows Components Wizard opens.

    3. Click the check box next to Internet Information Services (IIS) to add a check mark.
    4. Click Next.
    5. Click Finish.
  3. In the Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools.

    The Administrative Tools dialog opens.

  4. Double-click Internet Information Services.

The Internet Information Services dialog opens.

  5. Expand the IIS tree until you find the Default Web Site folder. On some servers, you might define the MIME types at the machine node (local computer) in IIS, not the Default Web Site.
  6. Right-click the Default Web Site folder.
  7. Select Properties.

The Default Web Site Properties dialog opens.

  8. Select the HTTP Headers tab.
  9. In the MIME Map section, click File Types or MIME Types.

  10. Click New Type or New.
  11. In the Associated extension or Extension field, type .xps.
  12. In the Content Type (MIME) or MIME Type field, enter application/vnd.ms-xpsdocument.
  13. Click OK until you exit from all open dialogs.
