Organizing Topics in the Content Explorer

When you create topics, they are added to the root folder in the Content Explorer if you accept the default settings. As your list of topics grows, it may become somewhat difficult to find a specific topic when you want to work on it. In order to keep your topics organized and easier to find, you can create subfolders in the Content Explorer and move topics into them.

How to create a folder in the Content Explorer

  1. Make sure the Content Explorer is open. By default, the Content Explorer is located on the left side of the interface in an accordion structure with the Project Organizer, unless you have previously moved it and saved the new layout. You may have to click the Content Explorer bar to bring it into view.
  2. Select the folder under which you want to place the new folder (either Content or a subfolder that you have created previously).
  3. In the local toolbar, click . A folder with the temporary name "NewFolder" is added to the Content Explorer.
  4. Click on the new folder.
  5. Press F2 on your keyboard.
  6. Type a new name for the folder and press Enter.

How to move a single topic into a folder

  1. In the Content Explorer, click the topic, drag it to the subfolder, and release the mouse button.
  2. If your topic contains links to other topics or files, you will be asked if you want to retain those links. If so, click Update Links.

How to move multiple topics into a folder

  1. In the Content Explorer, click the Show Files button .

The Content Explorer splits into two halves (left and right).

  2. On the left side of the split Content Explorer, select the folder containing the topics you want to move.
  3. On the right side of the split Content Explorer, select the topics. Hold down the SHIFT key and click a range of topics, or hold down the CTRL key and click individual topics.
  4. Drag the topics to the appropriate subfolder on the left side and release the mouse button.
  5. If your topic contains links to other topics or files, you will be asked if you want to retain those links. If so, click Update Links.
  6. To hide the split view, click the Show Files button again.

Note: When you create a new topic and want it to be placed in a particular subfolder, simply click the subfolder and then create the topic as you normally would. The topic will be automatically placed in that subfolder after it is created.
