Installing SQL Server

You must install Microsoft SQL Server Compact in order to take advantage of features such as MadCap Feedback Server, the built-in Analyzer, and IntelliSense.

If you are installing the MadCap Feedback Server, as opposed to using the hosted service, you need to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2005 Standard or Express. Otherwise, you only need Compact in order to take advantage of SQL-related features in Flare. See About MadCap Feedback.

Downloading and Installing SQL Server

You can download SQL Server Compact free from:

You can download SQL Server 2008 Express free from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=58ce885d-508b-45c8-9fd3-118edd8e6fff&DisplayLang=en

You can download SQL Server 2005 Express free from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3181842A-4090-4431-ACDD-9A1C832E65A6&displaylang=en

When installing SQL Server, it is recommended that you accept the default settings as you move through the installation wizard. If you want to explore any of the alternative options, please refer to the documentation provided with Microsoft SQL Server.

Note: SQL Server Compact will not run on Windows 2000. Also, for 64-bit systems, the 32-bit version of Compact is supported under WOW64 mode until a native 64-bit version is available.

Note: If you are using MadCap Feedback and you are installing Microsoft SQL Server on a remote machine, you must have "sysadmin permission" on the SQL Server itself (by default, administrators of the machine will usually have the correct permissions on the SQL Server). For more information, see FAQs—Connecting Feedback to a Remote SQL Server.

Administrative Privileges for Windows Vista

If you are using Windows Vista or later versions, you do not automatically have administrative privileges when installing SQL Server 2005. However, you can manually add yourself as an SQL Server administrator by using the following steps.

How to add yourself as an SQL Server administrator

  1. Select Start>All Programs>Microsoft SQL Server 2005>SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
  2. Click Add New Administrator.
  3. Highlight the server and click the button with the double arrows pointing to the right.
  4. Click OK.

Note: After installing SQL Server Compact, you should not analyze Flare V4 (or later) projects with Analyzer V1, but rather with later versions of Analyzer. The reason for this is that Analyzer V1 uses SQL Server 2005 and Express, whereas Flare V4 and later versions of Analyzer use SQL Server Compact. If you use Analyzer V1 for Flare V4 (or later) projects, you will experience conflicting databases.
